COLA, marking 25 years of service to the laboratory industry, announced it is funding a $25,000 endowment to expand Howard Community College’s newly created Medical Laboratory Technician program. The gift is designed to help create further awareness of laboratory science careers, at a time when there are more than 40,000 current lab job vacancies in the U.S.
The accrediting organization also announced plans to launch a course for allied health professionals, emphasizing the components of good clinical laboratory practices. Designed for technologists, nurses, and other health care personnel who work in hospitals, clinics, and physician office laboratories, the course will provide non-laboratorians with a basic knowledge of quality laboratory testing procedures in health care settings.
“At COLA, we think the most appropriate way to observe our 25th anniversary as a laboratory accreditor is by sponsoring curricula to attract more students to the profession, and to create awareness of the importance of quality lab practices in the delivery of safe, effective health care,” said Douglas Beigel, CEO of COLA. “At a time when many medical laboratory training programs have closed their doors, Howard Community College is creating new educational programming in this area, in response to projected job growth statistics in the lab sector.”
Beigel added that its new “Fundamentals of Clinical Laboratory Testing” course will be available through Howard Community College’s Continuing Education program, as well as at other venues throughout the U.S. Created by COLA’s education subsidiary, COLA Resources, Inc. (CRI), the course covers key clinical laboratory topics such as laboratory safety, specimen collection and labeling, Quality Control, Quality Assessment, and laboratory regulations. Successful participants can earn the equivalent of 5 CME, 5 PACE or 0.5 CEU credits.
