Lab Accreditor Offers Special Rates for Lab Accreditation, Educational Resources and More
Leading laboratory accreditor COLA, approved by Laboratory Field Services (LFS) to accredit laboratories in California, announced that California Medical Association (CMA) members who operate laboratories are eligible for special member-only discounts on a full range of its accreditation services and educational products.
With its deeming authority in California, COLA can now offer state licensing services to physician, hospital and independent laboratories, in addition to helping them meet, if not exceed, CLIA standards. CMA members operating laboratories are entitled to:
• A 15 percent discount on all COLA accreditation services and educational products;
• Year-round online support and a free basic quality laboratory course; and
• Free usage of the COLAcentral web portal, where lab professionals can prepare for upcoming surveys online, year round.
CMA members may also be eligible for discounts on proficiency testing through the programs of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) or the American College of Physicians (ACP).
COLA’s deemed authority was granted in 2013 in accordance with a law that permits private accreditors to apply to the state for approval if they demonstrate standards equal to or more stringent than the state’s requirements for licensure and registration.
“LFS’s approval highlights COLA’s commitment to patient safety, and our entire accreditation process to assist labs in understanding and complying with the evolving regulatory environment,” said Douglas Beigel, Chief Executive Officer of COLA. “This is particularly important in California, where laboratories face a complex set of state laws and regulations concerning quality activities, as well as the personnel who can supervise and perform testing.
“We welcome all physician, hospital and independent laboratories to our accreditation program and are pleased to be able to offer these discounts to those that are members of CMA.”
Beigel said that COLA has been continuously deemed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) since 1993 to provide federal certification under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) 1988, and currently accredits nearly 8,000 laboratories nationally, including nearly 500 in California. The organization is also the first and only laboratory accreditation organization to receive ISO 9001: 2008 certification, and recently was recertified by the organization. The designation covers COLA’s delivery and administration of its CLIA-equivalent accreditation program for medical laboratories, including on-site surveys, monitoring proficiency testing, and correcting citations through education and consultation.
