The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides professional medical knowledge and experience to give the “clinical voice” in the implementation of COLA’s policy.   The position requires a proactive approach to the development and implementation of COLA policy in a continuously evolving healthcare environment, with a constant and steady focus on quality laboratory medicine and patient safety.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Provide consultation on professional and clinical issues relating to physicians and other allied healthcare professionals in a team related orientation and the practice of medicine. The following activities provide examples of this responsibility:
    • Assist in the development of accreditation criteria and educational activities that addresses the variety of issues facing healthcare professionals providing quality laboratory medicine and patient care
  • Evaluate outcomes of COLA’s Accreditation process including the Staff Technical Accreditation Team (STAT) process, the Denial process, and the Appeals processes. In this capacity, the Chief Medical Officer will:
    • Assure that STAT team decisions are consistent with COLA’s mission, vision, policy, philosophy, organizational culture, and are appropriate to the nature of the infraction
    • Assess individual cases for potential risk of harm to patients or laboratory staff
    • Assess individual cases for COLA’s exposure to risks of potential liability, risk to deeming authority, and legal responsibility
  • Interact with physician colleagues/customers to include:
    • Explanation of necessary corrective actions
    • Investigating and resolving substantiated complaints
  • Participate in person at the regular (3x’s per year) Board of Directors meetings; Provide routine reports to the Board as directed
  • Provide consultation and support to other departments as needed in subject matter to which this person is deemed a “subject matter expert.” For example: Assisting in product and service development by representing the needs of COLA’s customers and verifying that new or redesigned products and services meet those needs. Additionally assisting:
    • Training Department
    • Sales Department
    • Marketing & Communications Department
  • Act as clinical editor of COLA education materials; to include:
    • Author subject matter (columns) for the COLA Insights newsletter, blogs, vlogs, videos
    • Participate as a member of COLA’s editorial board
  • Attend regional and national meetings on behalf of COLA, and give presentations when opportunities arise
  • Actively participate/monitor the activities of government & other accrediting organizations to gather factual information about events and changes in their products, services, or constituents that could be affecting COLA customer or have some impact on COLA in the future. (CLIA Partners, CLIAC, CDC and FDA as applicable)
  • As appropriate, act as an advocate for physicians and seek opportunities to promote COLA
  • Participate virtually in applicable monthly committee meetings of the Board of Directors
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • MD or DO degree
  • Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Cytopathology preferred
  • Technical knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and management
  • Experience in the private practice of medicine and clinical knowledge of laboratory testing
  • Clinical knowledge of the laboratory environment
  • Clinical knowledge of point of care practice sites
  • Experience with EMR or LIS/HIS and integration of electronic systems
  • Board or committee experience with a national medical organization or state medical association
  • Board or committee experience with CLIAC, CDC, TJC or CAP
